Hungary’s 4iG Space and Defense Technologies (4iG SDT) will collaborate with Northrop Grumman, one of the world’s largest military companies, in the field of next-generation defense systems, the Budapest-based company announced on Tuesday. In addition, 4iG has signed a preliminary agreement with Apex Space to develop a European model for the mass production of satellites.

The aim of the collaboration between 4iG SDT and the American company Northrop Grumman, one of the world’s five leading manufacturers of defense technology, is to explore joint projects and industrial cooperation in the fields of drone defense, modern weapon systems, and advanced defense technologies, as well as solutions for the space industry.

Talks could include examining the localization of production and industrial activities in Hungary, as well as opportunities for access to European defense markets,

reads the announcement.

Northrop Grumman is a leader in the development of smart guidance and fusing technologies required for precision-guided weapon systems, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and targeting capabilities of modern smart munitions.

The cooperation currently in preparation could offer Hungary the opportunity to become a key player in the field of precision fire support and smart weapon systems, involving the domestic defense industry in the future development of these cutting-edge technologies. One of 4iG SDT’s key objectives is to strengthen Hungary’s role in the development of next-generation NATO-compatible defense capabilities.

The agreement now concluded provides a framework for exploring how 4iG SDT’s industrial capabilities and Northrop Grumman’s expertise can contribute to the development of future NATO-compatible defense systems,

the statement said.

The parties believe that this cooperation will enable Hungary to become involved in the ecosystem of modern defense technologies with higher added value in European defense markets as well, through the industrial preparation of technologies and the localization of production activities in Hungary.

The company also reported on further cooperation.

4iG and its subsidiary REMRED Zrt. have signed a preliminary agreement with leading American satellite platform manufacturer Apex Space to develop a European model for mass production of satellites.

The aim of the partnership is to develop a series-ready satellite manufacturing system specifically designed for cooperative systems consisting of multiple satellites (satellite constellations).

This approach significantly reduces development costs and manufacturing time while ensuring consistently high quality, reads the statement.

The collaboration is based on the experience of the American company Apex in large-scale satellite manufacturing and the technical expertise and system integration capabilities of 4iG S&D and REMRED, laying the foundations for a competitive European satellite industry, from development to application.

As part of the three-way collaboration, the parties are exploring the possibility of establishing a joint venture and developing a manufacturing model optimized for satellite constellation applications that transfers the standardized and scalable mass production logic proven in the automotive industry to satellite manufacturing. This approach could significantly reduce development and delivery times, lead to predictable quality and cost-efficient manufacturing, and meet the requirements of government, defense, and commercial customers worldwide.

The collaboration could result in the creation of a unique, fast, cost-efficient, and gradually expandable satellite mass production capacity in Europe that meets the requirements of the global satellite market,

from short delivery times (12-18 month delivery cycle) to solutions based on proven flight technologies to the manufacture of constellations,” according to the company.

“Building on the experience of Apex Space, we are exploring the development of an industry model that, with the active involvement of Hungarian expertise, could bring about a paradigm shift in the European space industry,” István Sárhegyi, CEO of 4iG SDT, is quoted as saying in the announcement.

The collaboration between the three companies creates the opportunity for the partners to jointly lay the foundations for a competitive European satellite industry. In the coming period, their experts will prepare detailed technical and economic analyses to identify possible implementation models and the gradual expansion of production capacities in Hungary and Europe, the announcement said.
